When will tear stains fade?

Tear-stain results have two distinct phases, and it helps to know what each looks like so you don’t lose patience during the slower one.

Phase 1 — Less new staining (week 2–3)

The L-lysine and cranberry extract in the formula reduce the porphyrin compounds that cause new staining. The first sign of progress is drier eye area — less wet, less crusting, less fresh red-brown appearing on freshly cleaned fur.

If you wipe the eye area daily, by week 2–3 you should notice that the cloth comes back lighter.

Phase 2 — Visible coat fading (week 4–8)

The fur that’s already stained won’t unstain. It has to grow out and be replaced with new, clean fur. Fur growth rate varies by breed:

  • Cats and short-haired dogs — visible fading by week 4–5.
  • Long-haired or Maltese-style facial coats — visible fading by week 6–8.

This is where pet parents get discouraged — Phase 1 works but the coat still looks the same. Keep going. The new growth is happening; you’ll see it when it reaches the visible length.

Speeding Phase 2

Two things accelerate visible fading:

  1. Daily wiping with a damp cloth or pet-safe eye wipe. This prevents new staining and gently lifts dried porphyrin from short hairs.
  2. A careful trim of the most heavily stained tufts (only if your pet tolerates it). Don’t trim close to the eye — just the worst-stained edge fur. The trimmed area grows in clean.

What if nothing changes by week 8?

If both phases have shown no movement by week 8, the cause may be more than just porphyrin staining. Common confounders:

  • Active tear-duct blockage — needs a vet exam.
  • Yeast or bacterial infection of the eye-area folds — needs topical or oral treatment.
  • Allergies causing excessive tearing — needs a separate plan.
